FOI Requests in Central Government reach 500,000

In a recent article, Martin Rosenbaum, using government statistics, predicted that, in June 2022, the 500,000th FOI request to a central government department will have been submitted.

This is based on his analysis of official quarterly FOI statistics provided by the Cabinet Office.

We, of course, know that the total number of FOI requests submitted since the act came into force will be much higher than this, given that the Freedom of Information Act extends to all public sector bodies, with some notable exclusions, not just central government. Nevertheless, Rosenbaum’s continual analysis gives a good indication of the trends within FOI and its ongoing importance to democracy.

Given eCase’s growing popularity as the Correspondence Case Management service of choice for the public sector, we thought we would see what proportion of those 500,000 requests were processed through eCase.

1/4 of requests

Using Rosenbaum’s data, we found that eCase has processed 20.9% of all central government FOIs since FOI began, and approximately 25.5% since eCase’s inception. This statistic is particularly impressive considering the majority of eCase’s central government customer base has been benefitting from the service since 2015.

66% of Central Government Departments including the Cabinet Office, BEIS, DCMS, DEFRA, DIT, DWP, FCDO, HMT, HMRC, Home Office, and MoD are all reaping the rewards of using eCase to centralise, manage, and effectively report on their FOI requests.
